An Evening with NIGHTROX

English version

„I’m not musical at all!“ This is the sonorous counterpart to the well-known saying „I am not at all photogenic“ I grumbled into my beard this time. Thomas the drummer of Floyd Vegas and Fools Paradise also drums at Nightrox. And because Thomas has become the leitmotif of my stage photography, I was happy to be there again to take some pictures for the band site.

Nightrox is a Hamburg-based hard rock band that is currently starting out in a classic five-piece configuration. Vocals and percussion (Kai), guitar (Andy), bass (Dirk), keyboard (Stephan) and Thomas on drums.

One or two gigs are imminent. That was the reason to meet again for rehearsals. In the Hamburg industrial area of Rothenburgsort, in the basement of a concrete complex, rental rehearsal rooms were available. That’s where we met. The rehearsal room was fully equipped. The keyboard was installed, the guitars tuned, the amplifiers adjusted, and off we went.

If you have the chance to go with a band in their rehearsal room, you should definitely take it. The communication between the musicians, the coordination, and also the criticizing of the other, takes place here. One becomes a witness how a community develops from many individuals within a short time. A community that is together, laughs together and has fun together. Plays music. Rocks!

Photographically speaking, such a rehearsal room is anything but easy. It is cramped. A catastrophic light prevails. Beautiful backgrounds are also not to be thought of. There is always something in the way. Reason enough to make a virtue out of necessity. Open aperture and hope is the order of the day. Then, for once, the foreground and not the background is blurred.

Further on I could notice that keyboard players are hard to put in scene. Drummers are, once you’ve conquered their drum castle, which stands around them, good to depict. Guitarists create an attractive diagonal with their instrument and deliver beautiful detail shots on the strings with their dexterity.

The keyboarder on the other hand is relatively static behind his board while he gives everything for the music. His instrument doesn’t require the same physical effort as a drummer. Fortunately Stephan still gave everything he had and a lot great pictures were made. Most of the emotions are presented by the singer. But now see for yourself what I have been able to capture.
