Cecilia

„You’re very beautiful, and I’d love to take pictures of you once.“ It was late at night in a club in Hamburg and Cecilia looked at me critically. She had to decide whether it was a very crude approach or a serious – albeit crude – request. I quickly showed her my Instagram profile and invited her to look at my photos to see if she could imagine such a thing?

She could. She also was on Instagram and we followed each other. By Messenger I could convince her to a shooting. Also by means of this blog. What luck!

Now it is not at all up to me to address beauties in clubs. Why did I make an exception to this rule and overcome myself? So far my models were used to standing in front of a camera and posing accordingly. That made them more or less the „old hands“. At least, in contrast to me, who had just started with people photography.

For my further development it seemed important to me to photograph someone who is not already so experienced that she/he has already developed her/his „signature poses“ for her-/himself. Someone who would make it a little harder for me and would also demand more instructions. Someone who might be more critical with the results.

Corwin von Kuhwede explains in his brilliant contribution series „Fotogrow“ that this is exactly what he favours. Not because Corwin urgently needs to practice guidance, with nieces. He is interested in discovering new types, new characters, for more authenticity in his pictures. That’s why he observes interesting people intensively, for example at parties or similar occasions, and then addresses them specifically about the possibility of a shooting.

I wanted to take that as an example. And then I coincidentally saw Cecilia in the club with her friends. She moved gracefully to the music and was a very elegant appearance of natural aesthetics.

My plan only half worked out with her. She’s not used to modeling (yet), but she didn’t need much guidance. We got very quickly into a common flow and developed picture ideas together. You already know the location from the article The Super Mummys.

We took photos under natural window light and with a softbox in front of a dark background. A sofa formed a nice complementary contrast with Cecilia’s flawless skin. We both found that the good old coffee cup, the support wheel of every people photographer, has to be replaced by a smartphone. Because Cecilia is a modern woman.
